Begin a National Alliance

How to Create a National Alliance

Members of the Alliance Against Hunger and Malnutrition share a common commitment to the rapid eradication of hunger and malnutrition in the world. Membership is open to all who share the Alliance Against Hunger and Malnutrition’s basic principles and aims.

The initiative to create an Alliance can come from a local non-governmental organization (NGO), from an international partner of the Alliance Against Hunger and Malnutrition’s or from a national government itself – any organization that recognizes the value of working together in a participatory way to present a stronger front and a common voice in raising awareness and participating in political dialogue aimed at establishing national, regional and global strategies to end hunger. A set of Guidelines is provided to support the establishment of National Alliances.

Strategies for National Alliances

Each National Alliance develops its own national strategy, adapted to local conditions and supporting the development of national programmes.

Although there are no set rules for the establishment of National Alliances, the Alliance Against Hunger and Malnutrition has developed a set of guidelines for facilitating any country’s effort to establish a National Alliance. These guidelines offer simple step-by-step information on how to form a National Alliance, and list the types of organizations and activities found in existing Alliances.

Principles and aims

The Alliance is a voluntary association whose members share a common commitment to the rapid eradication of hunger in the world. Membership is open to all who share its basic principles and aims, which have been defined by the National Alliances as:

  • contributing to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), especially by strengthening national and global commitment and action to end hunger;
  • giving expression to the aspirations of the poor and hungry;
  • engaging the poor and hungry as full partners in finding and implementing solutions that make a real difference to their lives and the lives of generations to come;
  • facilitating dialogue on the most effective measures to reduce hunger;
  • promoting mutually supportive action involving governments and other stakeholders in the fight against hunger.
